Ingredients for 2 portions

Method

  1. Start with 300 g plain ready-cooked rice and 100 g plain natto (about two small packs). If the natto was frozen, thaw it in the refrigerator beforehand; discard any included seasoning or mustard sachets.
  2. Heat the cooked rice thoroughly according to its package, then divide it between two bowls. Thinly slice 12 g spring onion and shred 2 g plain nori.
  3. Transfer the natto to a separate bowl. Stir briskly for about 30 seconds until the beans become airy and sticky; mix in the measured 10 g soy sauce.
  4. Spoon the natto evenly over the hot rice and finish with spring onion and nori. Serve immediately.

Two modest breakfast bowls. The 10-minute total assumes ready-cooked rice and plain natto already thawed; cooking rice from dry and overnight thawing are excluded. Use only plain fermented soybeans and discard seasoning sachets, which can contain fish or other allergens; check the package for vegan suitability. The photograph shows only rice and natto, without the measured onion, sauce or nori. Soy sauce contributes a conservative gluten flag.
